We Are What We Eat

Documentary

This video, created during the COVID-19 pandemic, examines how the stories behind the foods we eat can bring us together or create boundaries that divide us.

It centers around non-profit co-founder and executive director Basma Alawee and her experiences as a refugee, as well as her organization's "Hearty Tables" program, a series of cooking demonstrations through which immigrants shared their stories of coming to the U.S.

It also includes interviews with anthropology and sociology professors from the University of Florida and North Carolina State University about how food can shape identity and culture, and inevitably, the politics that accompany them.

Bats Aren't As Scary As You Think

Educational

The University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute released this educational video about bats during the COVID-19 pandemic to give insight into the misunderstood mammals and explain how diseases spread from bats and other wildlife to humans.

This video used a combination of remote recordings, stock footage and a last-minute recreation of a stop-motion sequence created with the equipment and supplies I had available in my apartment.

TESI Florida Research Roundup: November 2019

Educational Sci-Comm

At UF's Thompson Earth Systems Institute, we liked to showcase environmental research from universities around the state in a newscast-style video series we called Florida Research Roundup.

I anchored, edited and helped script the show from our articles about the featured studies.

In this episode, we highlighted microplastics in Tampa Bay, seagrass meadows' deep roots, fish that may help control cyanobacterial growth on reefs and saltwater intrusion's negative impact on sea level rise in coastal wetlands.

Putting A Scientist In Every Florida School

Promotional

This video promotes the Thompson Earth System Institute's "moonshot" initiative, featuring Florida science teachers who participated in a professional development workshop at the University of Florida.

This video uses a mix of footage I shot and additional b-roll and interviews filmed by someone else. I overcame the challenge of using heavily clipped source material by cleaning up the audio as much as possible in Adobe Audition.

This was my first video for TESI.
